Baby and child, 5, among eight injured as Brit tourist smashes into cafe terrace in Fuerteventura

A baby and a five-year-old girl were among eight people injured after a British tourist smashed his car through a packed cafe terrace in the tourist hotspot of Fuerteventura.

CCTV footage shows the moment the white rental car ploughs through cafe customers with a pushchair thrown in the air and one man stuck on the bonnet.

Blood covered the floor of the al fresco terrace as firefighters worked to make the area safe and get the eight victims to hospital on Thursday morning.

Among the seriously injured are a four-month-old baby, two women aged 18 and 49, and two men aged 40 and 43, all with multiple injuries.

The other three injured are a five-year-old girl and two men aged 44 and 50, who suffered moderate injuries in the horror crash.

Spanish police suspect the driver may have suffered a heart attack or another medical emergency behind the wheel, Canarian Weekly reported.

Local reports suggest the car was travelling at about 50-60mph when it mounted the busy Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

The Mayor of the La Oliva municipality where the accident occurred said in a statement yesterday evening: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to clarify what happened and provide support to the victims and their families at this difficult time.”
