Lee Bullen hailed Ayr for handing out a long overdue thumping as they rattled five past Queen's Park.
The Honest Men were in irresistible form as they put the Spiders to the sword at Somerset this afternoon.
Dipo Akinyemi's hat trick - which took his tally to 10 for the season - stole the show.
And Bullen believes his side have been waiting to send out a message to the rest of the Championship for weeks.
He said: "A result like that was coming after last week and previous games this season when we created so many opportunities but weren’t as ruthless as today.
“If I’m Owen Coyle I’m thinking it’s never a 5-0 game because they put a lot into it but the difference was that we were ruthless and our keeper and defence were wonderful.
“But that clean sheet is as important as any of the goals we scored.
"You get days like that in football, they don’t come along too often so we’ll enjoy them.
“We needed a result today to try and get ourselves back on track and into the mix at the top of the table which has tightened right up again."
Ayr, who showed four changes from last week's defeat to Inverness, hit the front after a flowing move ended with Akineymi heading home a Paddy Reading cross.
Stephen Eze missed a sitter with a free header from six yards as Queen's pushed for a leveller.
Akinyemi punished the miss with a brilliant finish after being played in by Josh Mullin.
Reading cleared a Lee Kilday shot off the line as Queen's continued to threaten but they couldn't live with Ayr's attack.
And Akinyemi continued where he left off just after the restart as he completed his treble with a lethal finish following Brad Young's setup work.
United then went into overdrive and made it four as the impressive Logan Chalmers saw his shot touched home by Young in the box.
And Ayr quickly hit a fifth with their best goal of the afternoon as Ben Dempsey produced a brilliant backheel finish to convert Mullin's centre.
That gave Bullen the luxury of being able to rest a host of his top names in the last 20 minutes as Ayr coasted home to a memorable three points.
Spiders boss Owen Coyle said: "Ayr were clinical, particularly the boy Akinyemi who looks a wonderful signing by Lee Bullen.
"But we cannot afford to give up the goals that we did."
