Locals in Long Eaton have described busy roundabouts at The Green in the town centre as 'awful' but fear nothing much can be done to change the situation.
The residents add that both roundabouts at either side of the Long Eaton Green, the roundabout off Derby Road and Midland Street and the roundabout at Nottingham Road and Waverley Street, cause traffic problems in the area.
They also doubt that any improvements to the roundabouts would make a difference due to how complicated and busy they are.
Retired Sean Doherty, 68, from Long Eaton, told Nottinghamshire Live was sceptical that changes to the roundabout at Derby Road would make much of a difference to the traffic.
“It’s a complicated junction - you can’t change the layout of the junction,” Mr Doherty said.
“The flow is still there but obviously a bit slow.
“But at the end of the day if there were traffic signals here - it’s a complicated roundabout and complicated junction.
“Traffic signals I don't think would make much difference - you’d have to reconfigure the junction and it would cause massive disruption to the town for a considerable time.”
Melanie Dixon, 50, a cleaner from Long Eaton, says that the traffic can become awful and pedestrians can struggle to cross the road.
She said: “Sometimes it’s awful - it really is awful.
“Sometimes it can go really slow but it can speed up.
“When you’re trying to cross it takes ages to cross because there's cars coming through and people don’t let you through.”
Wayne Curley, 43, from Shardlow, usually shops in Long Eaton and says both of the roundabouts are a problem.
Mr Curley said that the Derby Road island is the one where the traffic is most of the time.
He said: “Most of the time it’s the island but it’s not as bad as Derby or Nottingham.
“It does get annoying.
He adds that the roundabout at Nottingham Road is also an issue.
“This island is a problem as well - it always seems to flow fairly quickly.
“I come here once a week for shopping - I don't know if I came at a good time.
“It's usually 9 or 10 o'clock and it’s not usually too bad but at dinner time it gets worse.”
Another resident from Long Eaton, who didn’t want to be named, says there's a lot of traffic on the Nottingham Road roundabout which gets backed up with traffic due to the traffic lights in the area.
He said: “This is always a bottleneck.
“There's just a lot of traffic on this junction and you’ve got the supermarkets just down there.
“There’s a lot of lights which obviously backs everything up.
“You go on a Saturday morning, it's grid locked.
“And Derby Road past Trent College that gets really busy at times as well.
“The real answer is that there are too many people in cars.”
A Derbyshire County Council Spokesperson said: “Erewash Borough Council have a town deal for Long Eaton from the Government and one of the areas they have identified is The Green. The scheme is yet to be developed but Derbyshire County Council will be working with the Borough on the plans and will engage and consult with the public on any proposals.”
