AutoZone Worker Gets Sent Home Mid-Shift. Then He Says It’s Because He Tried Cleaning Up: 'Why Am I Being Fired?'

A man claims he was fired from AutoZone just days into the job—and he says the reason caught him off guard.

Zay Mulla (@zayy.mulla) posted a video saying that a manager fired him on his fourth day and that he wanted to explain what happened.

“This is crazy,” Mulla says at the start of the clip.

He says the issue started during his second shift, when he walked into the store and noticed a mess in the back—boxes and products scattered around, some on the floor. In a follow-up clip, Mulla also notes that there was oil spilled on the floor.

“There’s only me and one other manager in the store. Who is responsible for cleaning this up?” Mulla says.

Mulla says he decided to clean it himself. But according to him, that’s where things went sideways.

After he picked everything up, he says he was told the situation was somehow his fault. It’s not clear whether he’s saying the manager believed he made the mess or took issue with him stopping to clean instead of doing something else.

“I’m being let go for being a good guy [and] cleaning up after people,” Mulla says.

He adds that his manager told him he was “causing problems,” which presumably led to his termination. As of this writing, the video has more than 190,000 views.

What Happened?

What actually happened here is harder to pin down, because situations like this don’t usually come down to one rule being broken.

Companies like AutoZone tend to operate under fairly strict internal policies. There are clear rules regarding handling cash, safety, and following managers’ directions, so, on paper, that would suggest most firings fall into those buckets.

Tell us what you think!

But day to day, it’s often less clear-cut.

In a store like that, a lot comes down to how a manager perceives the work you’re doing. Cleaning up might feel like the obvious thing to do, but, as some commenters noted, if they wanted you to focus on something else, it can come off as not following directions.

Of course, those who are newer to the job might still be figuring out what’s expected of them. And if communication isn’t clear, small moments can snowball.

That doesn’t mean every firing is fair or handled well. There have been cases where employees have accused the company of retaliation or inconsistent enforcement of policies, especially when conflicts with management are involved.

In Mulla’s case, what stands out is how quickly things seemingly moved. By his account, he went from trying to help to being let go within minutes.

Of course, without hearing the company’s side of the story, it’s hard to say exactly why the decision was made.

Viewers Still Unsure What Happened

Mulla’s videos left many viewers with more questions than answers, and the comment section quickly filled with people trying to make sense of the story.

“I feel like there’s a lot more to the story we’re missing,” one person said.

“Sorry, bud, but you still haven’t really explained what happened,” another added.

“Naw, bruh, I need context,” a third viewer wrote. “Your story don’t make sense.”

“This doesn’t make any sense,” a fourth commenter echoed.

Others were less sympathetic, saying the situation didn’t quite add up based on what was shown and suggesting there may be more to it.

“Your 4th day? You’re doing way too much, bro,” one person wrote.

“How do you have so many issues after 4 days?” another asked.

“Recording doesn’t help you at all,” another commenter said.

A few tried to piece together a possible explanation, pointing to how things might have been interpreted on the job.

“If your manager didn’t want you cleaning it up and wanted you doing something else at the time, then, yes, it’s your fault for not following directions,” one person wrote.

“I’m so confused. Did they claim you didn’t clean up adequately?” another asked.

“I think it’s you,” a third person added.
