An independent Australian MP who was struck by a car on Monday has had her leg amputated following what prime minister Anthony Albanese described as a deliberate attack.

Helen Haines, 65, underwent surgery overnight and remains in a critical but stable condition after being struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her electoral district office in Wangaratta in Victoria, police said.
