Australian football club sends message to Iranian women players who were granted asylum

  • Five players from the Iranian women's football team have been granted asylum in Australia following their participation in the Asian Cup.
  • The players sought refuge due to fears of persecution upon returning to Iran, having notably refused to sing the national anthem before a match last week.
  • Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed their successful humanitarian visa process and stated the Australian Federal Police assisted them in reaching a safe house.
  • Mr Burke extended the offer of asylum to other members of the Iranian squad, emphasising the same opportunity was available.
  • Australian football club Brisbane Roar sent the players a message, offering them “a place to train, play and belong”, as they expressed admiration for their courage and talent.
