What we learned, 15 February 2026
With that we’re wrapping up the blog. Before we go, here are the major stories from Sunday:
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced a $30bn facility for Aukus submarines during a visit to the Osborne shipyards in Adelaide.
The new opposition leader, Angus Taylor, and his deputy, Jane Hume, have spent the day making media appearances but have held back on frontbench announcements.
Taylor and Hume have flagged that immigration will be an early policy fight for the Liberals, claiming that numbers are too high.
Hume said the party leadership was spilled as “something has to give” with the Liberals facing their worst result since 1944.
Outspoken former Liberal staffer Charlotte Mortlock, who had been working to bring more women into the party, quit the Liberals following the removal of Sussan Ley.
Barriers to an EU free trade deal have been “significantly reduced” but there is no deal yet, the trade minister, Don Farrell, says.
A man has been charged after a police chase ended in a crash that killed two in Sydney’s west.
The prime minister says he has “no doubt” Australia will receive nuclear submarines under the Aukus deal.
We’ll pick things up again tomorrow.
