Jason Day was left to rue an errant tee shot late in his second Olympic round, the only blemish as the Australian No.1 settled into his Paris campaign.
After a nervous opening round at Le Golf National, Day climbed up the leaderboard eight places to a tie for 13th at five under after carding a three-under 68.
But the field have work to do to catch the leading trio - Japan's overnight leader Hideki Matsuyama, 2020 gold medallist American Xander Schauffele and Britain's Tommy Fleetwood - who are at 11 under.
