Aussie soap Neighbours to return - but not quite as we know it

Aussie soap Neighbours will be returning to TV screens next year - but not quite as we know it.

The show, which first aired in 1985, ran for 37 years before calling it a day with what was expected to be its final episode in July of this year. But the programme that kickstarted the careers of so many household names has been saved by Amazon, who have bought the whole Neighbours' back catalogue and announced plans to bring the show back, reports Leicestershire Live.

In 1987, an incredible 19.6 million UK viewers tuned in to watch Scott and Charlene, played by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue, get married and, during 9,000 episodes of the soap, the likes of Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce and Natalie Imbruglia were also given their first acting big breaks.

All of them returned to Ramsay Street for the final episode that was screened in the UK on Channel 5 four months ago and, among the characters that have already been confirmed for the resurrected show, are popular quartet Susan and Dr Karl Kennedy, Toadie and Paul Robinson.

Jackie Woodburne, 66, was even used, in character as Susan, to inform fans of the exciting news in a social media clip.

But there is set to be one difference - episodes of the show will be less frequent and not available on a daily basis with a TV insider telling The Sun: "Fans loved the fact that Neighbours was a soap which was served up on a constant, regular basis - they couldn’t get enough of it.

"And the fact that it was always aired each weekday during its 37-year run was one of the reasons it was special in the minds of devotees. So while they’ll rejoice at the news of the revival, they might yet be disappointed by what form it takes."
