At long last, Disney has announced the lead stars of its upcoming live-action remake of Tangled, finally putting to bed a fan-casting frenzy that began way back in 2022.
In a surprise move, the House of Mouse decided to cast two relative unknowns in the roles of Rapunzel and her swoon-worthy love interest Flynn Rider first introduced in the 2010 animation.
Doing Australia proud, it’s Sydney actress Teagan Croft who’ll be letting down her hair as the Disney princess, with Milo Manheim cast in the role of her outlaw BF.
Since no fandom ride quite as hard as Disney stans, it wasn’t long before Croft’s social media was flooded with newfound fans. Scores of users took to her IG comments to congratulate her, saying she is “welcome to the Disney Princess universe” and expressing their excitement at her landing the role.
“Congrats !! You’re gonna be a perfect Rapunzel,” one user wrote, while another said Croft is “soon to be my favourite Disney princess”.
While Croft and Manheim are relative newcomers, you might’ve seen their faces before. Croft portrayed famous real-life Aussie sailor Jessica Watson in the 2023 Netflix biopic True Spirit, while Manheim did the Disney rounds with the Zombies movie franchise.
The news throws a curveball at years worth of incessant fan-casts, which have been overtaking our feeds ever since rumours of the live-action remake began circulating.
During that time, names like Sabrina Carpenter, Madelyn Cline and White Lotus’ Sarah Catherine Hook sat atop fans’ lists for the role of Rapunzel, while Austin Butler and Jonathan Bailey were thrown around for Flynn.
Big Brother’s Vinnie Brigante also put his hand up for the Flynn role, but that was a shot as long as Rapunzel’s hair.
While those predictions turned out to be false, there are still major roles for the remake that haven’t been announced, including villain Mother Gothel and Rapunzel’s chameleon sidekick Pascal.
Scarlett Johansson was heavily rumoured to be portraying Mother Gothel but reportedly dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Fans have manifested Kathryn Hahn in her place, and are keen for Ben Schwartz to voice Pascal, but neither of those picks have been confirmed.
Croft and Manheim will take the reins from Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, who voiced Rapunzel and Flynn in the 2010 animation. The live-action remake will be directed by Michael Gracey, who has elsewhere helmed fellow musical The Greatest Showman.
A release date for the movie has not been announced, but my guess is the wig department is already at work crafting one hell of a mane. Here’s hoping Croft’s neck can withstand it.
