August Bank Holiday: Experts name busiest day on UK roads

  • The RAC predicts a record 20 million leisure car trips will be made over the bank holiday weekend, marking the highest total since tracking began in 2015.
  • Friday is set to be the busiest day on the roads with 4.1 million getaway journeys, with motorists advised to set off before 10am to avoid heavy congestion.
  • Rising fuel costs have influenced travel, with an RAC survey revealing 13 per cent of drivers have scrapped their travel plans due to higher petrol and diesel prices.
  • Significant delays are expected along key motorway hotspots including the M5, M25 and A303, whilst motoring groups urge drivers to conduct basic vehicle checks.
  • Rail passengers face additional disruption, notably with the closure of the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Peterborough on Sunday.
