The electric Audi A4 was supposed to prove that Volkswagen Group's next-generation platform actually works. Instead, it's already proving how far behind schedule that platform really is.
The A4 E-Tron will now enter production no earlier than March 2029, according to Audi Chief Executive Officer Gernot Döllner. The delay traces directly to technical snags with the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), Volkswagen's next-generation EV architecture.
That timing is roughly nine months later than the mid-2028 target Döllner himself set in October 2025.
What Changed With The A4 E-Tron Timeline?
Insiders cited by the outlet Handelsblatt say the March 2029 date could still slip further, to late April or early May 2029. Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr had insisted there was "no need to correct" the production date, right before the company corrected it.
Döllner describes the shift as ordinary development friction rather than a rethink of the car itself. With design inspired by the Concept C, the A4 E-Tron is still planned as a saloon and an Avant, and it remains one of the first vehicles built on Audi's electric platform, whichever year it lands.
The root problem, according to Handelsblatt, is Volkswagen's decision to switch SSP's onboard electrical system from the usual 12-volt standard to 48 volts after development was already underway. That single change rippled through engineering work across the Group and its suppliers, adding months nobody had budgeted for.
It is the second consecutive slip for a nameplate that only recently returned.
The combustion A4 ended production in 2024, giving way to the new A5. Döllner had promised the A4's return as an electric SSP model would happen by 2028 at the absolute earliest.
Why VW's SSP Platform Keeps Slipping
SSP is not a new idea. Volkswagen announced it in July 2021 as the eventual successor to both the MEB platform underpinning cars like the Q4 E-Tron and the 800-volt PPE architecture used in the A6 E-Tron and Q6 E-Tron. Five years later, SSP has yet to put a single car into production.
Handelsblatt reports that against the new spring 2029 timing, SSP's actual launch lands roughly three years behind Volkswagen's original 2026 deadline. Volkswagen has also trimmed the platform's scope, from eight planned variants down to four, a consolidation the company describes as strategic rather than defensive.
Other SSP-dependent models are caught in the same slide. The electric Golf and electric T-Roc face delays that could push them into 2030, and Volkswagen now describes SSP models built with US partner Rivian's technology as arriving only "from the end of the decade."
Practically, that means Audi's MEB- and PPE-based EVs are not a bridge to SSP anymore. They are the plan for the rest of the decade, and buyers eyeing an electric mid-size Audi will be shopping the current electric model lineup for years longer than anyone at Ingolstadt intended.
