Aspley electrician fuming after losing £5,000 worth of equipment in 'terrible' van robbery

An electrician was left fuming after he was robbed of £5,000 worth of equipment after a van break-in. Obasi George-O'basi, of Aspley, said he was shocked when he made the discovery just before he was about to head off to work.

He parked his van at the Forest Fields Park and Ride in Hyson Green at around 8pm on February 27, and left it overnight. The 43-year-old spent the night at a friend's flat which he was also maintaining and "could not believe his eyes" when he saw his van's window smashed and his tools were missing.

Mr George-O'basi told Nottinghamshire Live: "It took me three years to build up my equipment and get all my tools. It took one incident and now it is all gone. I started everything from the scratch and now I have to do it all over again. It is terrible." He is self-employed in the business he started when the pandemic hit, he explained. "So it is a huge loss for a small company", he said.

The electrician turned business owner of Gobs Electrics estimates estimates a he's been left with a whopping £5,000 loss following the incident. Now, Mr George-O'basi said he is worried for his business.

He added: "I had to borrow money from a friend and client to continue working. The bigger equipment cost me £3,000, but then there are the small bits and pieces that you do not realise they are gone until you need them. I have never experienced anything like this before, and I cannot afford having it again. I am just very worried now.

"I feel like I always have to look over my shoulder now, I always need to be careful where I park. I do not even know where to park anymore. Mentally I am just terrible at the moment. These people who robbed me are mean and careless, they could not care less."

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Radford and Park Paul Ferguson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We were called to reports that a van had been broken into at the Forest Recreation Ground and that a number of tools and equipment which were essential to the owner were taken. This has clearly had a huge impact, taking away a significant number of items that were essential to his livelihood and the way he makes a living, which will not only would be expensive but would also take time to replace.

“We are working closely to conduct enquiries and find those responsible, and officers are dedicated to their investigation into the incident, which happened at around 9.50pm on Sunday 27 February 2022. We would now ask anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with information, to get in touch on 101 quoting incident 73 of 28 February 2022.”
