Ashwin reflects on 2012 series against England as career-turning point

Reflecting on his journey, senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the 2012 Test series against England as a pivotal moment in his illustrious career. Despite facing a humbling series defeat at home, Ashwin described it as a crucial learning experience that helped him address his flaws.

England clinched the 2012 series with a 2-1 victory, marking their first triumph in India since 1984-85.

"The 2012 series against England was the turning point for me. It taught me what to correct in my game," Ashwin said in a press conference on the eve of his 100th Test match.

Acknowledging the milestone, the 37-year-old emphasized the importance of the journey rather than just reaching the landmark. Despite the occasion, Ashwin maintained focus on the upcoming match, stating, "We have a Test match to win."

Ashwin said, "(It's) a pretty big occasion. More than the destination, the journey has been very special. It doesn't change preparation for this game."

He then picked the performance that is always close to his heart.

"One of my finest spells in Test cricket has to be 2018-19 in Birmingham," he answered.

Having recently joined the elite 500-wicket club in Test cricket, becoming the second Indian after Anil Kumble to achieve this feat, Ashwin's career, spanning over 13 years, has seen more highs than lows.

India head into the Dharamsala Test having taken a series-clinching 3-1 lead in the five-match contest.
