A standardised ashwagandha root extract was well tolerated when taken daily for 24 weeks, with no treatment-related liver or kidney injury reported in a multicentre clinical trial involving 1,200 adults in India, PTI reported on Tuesday.
The findings add to clinical evidence on the safety of prolonged use of standardised ashwagandha preparations, while also addressing whether the herbal extract affects vaccine-induced immunity. The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found no significant difference in virus-neutralising activity between participants who received ashwagandha and those given a placebo.
