Artists are telling off Gen Zs for being bad crowds — are phoneless gigs the answer?

The sun had only recently set over Alexandra Palace this Friday when Canadian DJ and producer Kaytranada took to the stage in the venue’s West Hall. Half-empty Buzzballs had been discarded in the bins outside, bladders emptied in anticipation, cigarettes stubbed out, all in the name of live music. Live music and dancing.

Known for his unique, bouncy brand of electronic R&B, this two-hour show promised to have sweat dripping down the walls of Ally Pally by the final beat drop. But when that moment came, during Kaytranada’s cult 2013 remix of Teedra Moses’ Be Your Girl, the pyros and confetti exploded over a largely stationary crowd, 90 per cent of whom had their phones fixed to the stage, entirely unmoving (lest it disrupt the quality of their shot, presumably).
