Arteta’s impossible task, Trossard’s mission - Arsenal winners and losers from Fulham victory

Winners

Leandro Trossard

What a performance from the January signing. Leandro Trossard has arrived at Arsenal and become an instant hit thanks to his similarly immediate impact on the field and respective performances.

But to chip in with three assists and produce a performance with the movement akin to that of the centre-forward he’s effectively been filling in for was unbelievable. Teams just cannot seem to anticipate where he, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard are going to be; it was some of the best football I’ve seen live.

Thomas Partey

Arsenal struggled to dominate the ball against Sporting CP. Whilst this is not necessarily a criticism of Jorginho, today’s performance from Thomas Partey demonstrated what true control of the middle third of a football pitch is all about.

From the recovery of possession, progression of the ball and influence on the players around him, it was a ten-out-of-ten display. Perhaps starting him in midweek is a must to ensure progression past the Liga Portuguese side.

Gabriel Jesus

Tricky to not mention this man among the winners. Even amongst the goals it was arguably the biggest cheer of the day when Gabriel Jesus came off the bench.

Not only that but the Brazilian looked sharp too. Although he missed a great opportunity when Fabio Vieira played him in, his quickness of thought was evident and his pass to set up Reiss Nelson was excellent - it’s a joyous thing to see him back.

Losers

Manchester City

After battling to a rather fortunate three points against Crystal Palace courtesy of a silly penalty in a game where the Citizens never truly looked like scoring, to see their title rivals head to a Fulham side who have been decent this season and win comfortably will be a pain. Perhaps more so thanks to the number of goals the Gunners scored.

The 3-0 win means there are just five goals between Arsenal and Manchester City. Arsenal have two home games against Crystal Palace and Leeds before their trip to Anfield and have the chance to get more points and more goals therefore on the board.

Mikel Arteta

Yes, quite simply because he’s the man that has to decide to leave someone out of this front three if Gabriel Jesus is ready to start matches. I would not want to be the man to leave Leandro Trossard out of the side considering the form he’s shown in his past five starts.

How can you? As described above, his performance was near-perfect.

Arguably there is an opportunity to start Gabriel Jesus against Sporting CP on Thursday in the Europa League. Allowing the Brazilian to stake his claim to be back amongst the Gunners starters.
