Arsenal vs Coventry LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and fan reaction

Arsenal vs Coventry LIVE

A brand new Premier League season is now up and running with Arsenal beating Coventry City in a meeting between the two title winners in north London on Friday night. For the first time in over two decades, the Gunners entered a campaign as defending champions and followed up their victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend with an even more comfortable win.

In the hope of defending their Premier League crown this year, Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis have been added to the ranks during the summer, while Ezri Konsa was presented to supporters before kick-off after finalising his £55million transfer from Aston Villa. Kai Havertz set the champions on their way inside 15 minutes before Bukayo Saka doubled the hosts’ lead midway through the first half. Martin Odegaard added a third for Arsenal four minutes after the interval.

The visitors - who won the Championship in impressive fashion last season - were dealt a major injury blow ahead of their first Premier League fixture in over 25 years. Follow Arsenal vs Coventry back below with expert analysis from Standard Sport’s Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal player ratings

22:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Bukayo Saka 8

Looked to be free of injury concerns and back to something close to his best. Alert to finish when Rushworth parried into his path. Too sharp for Dasilva and he kept cutting Coventry open from short corners. Really encouraging.

Martin Odegaard 8

Looked almost embarrassed that he scuffed his shot that badly and it still went in. Kept things ticking over in the final third and involved in some lovely combinations with Saka and White. Also led the way for tackles.

Christos Tzolis 9

Absolutely electric. So direct and his decision-making is brilliant. His pressing led to the first goal and it was then his ball across goal for Saka to double the lead. Ran Coventry ragged. Will score plenty and assist even more.

That's a clear sign that even Arteta, as intense and laser-focused as he is, knows this match is done. Saka and Rice both really impressive having had no pre-season, and they get about 25 minutes of rest now.

Arsenal 3-0 Coventry

21:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

56 min: Nice spell for the visitors as Van Ewijk’s inviting cross is just a little too strong for his team-mates in the middle. Still, they keep possession and Dasilva is able to win a corner off Saka.

Arsenal 3-0 Coventry

21:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

52 min: Nearly a fourth for Arsenal as Rushworth tips over an effort from Lewis-Skelly. All Coventry’s undoing that. Losing possession where you can get punished.

Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium

21:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

That'll do it for Arsenal. Match effectively put to bed within three minutes of the restart. Not been a great night for Rushworth in goal, to put it mildly. The Gunners have taken full advantage.

21:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

48 min: ARSENAL SCORE AGAIN!

It’s Arsenal’s night for sure as captain Martin Odegaard mis-hits a shot and Rushworth can’t stop the ball crossing the line.

Arsenal 2-0 Coventry

20:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

34 min: A period of keep ball for the champions. Moving the ball from side-to-side, looking for an opening and it comes as Odegaard slides in White with a fine pass but the Arsenal right-back is denied from close range.

At the other end, Gabriel brings down Simms on the edge of the box and is shown a yellow card.

Big chance for Coventry here.

Arsenal 2-0 Coventry

20:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: Arsenal come forward again down the left, the ball eventually comes to Odegaard and he tries a scoop pass over the top for Havertz but the offside flag is up.

Arsenal 2-0 Coventry

20:27 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

27 min: Yirenkyi booked for pulling back Lewis-Skelly. Arsenal free-kick in a decent position and it’s played short before Grimes does well to buy a foul from Havertz.

Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium

20:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal look so powerful driving forward. Rice just charged into the space, nobody could stay with him.

Tzolis does enough with the ball across the face of goal and Saka is up and running for the new season. Once again, it's first-class decision-making from Tzolis.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Coventry | Bukayo Saka ‘23

20:23 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

23 min: WHAT A START!

Arsenal go 2-0 up inside the opening 23 minutes and it’s a easy tap-in for Bukayo Saka at the back post after Christos Tzolis’ cross was deflected into his path.

Could not miss.

Arsenal 1-0 Coventry

20:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Minor scare for Arsenal with Gabriel, all fine now as he’s able to continue.

Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium

20:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Great pressing from Tzolis, but that is so, so smooth from Calafiori. Just takes the ball in his stride, finds Havertz perfectly and the German sweeps it into the bottom corner.

Just the start Arsenal wanted to the match and to the season, settling everyone down.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Coventry | Kai Havertz ‘15

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

15 min: CHAMPIONS LEAD!

Kai Havertz strokes the ball into the bottom corner after being picked out by Riccardo Calafiori. The goal sort of came out of nothing as Van Ewijk’s clearance did not go to plan.

Arsenal 0-0 Coventry

20:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Simms does well to hold off Gabriel which allows Coventry to sustain possession in Arsenal’s half. One shot is blocked but the visitors are able to recycle the ball.

Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tzolis is everywhere. Fired over when creating space for himself on the left, then over to the other flank to pick out Saka in the box. Now not far away at all from finding the bottom corner from a corner.

Looks full of confidence.

Arsenal 0-0 Coventry

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Rice with an effort from range but his shot was always rising. Tzolis involved once again.

Arsenal 0-0 Coventry

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: Good run from Tzolis as he pops up on the left and puts in a first time cross which Saka does well to control before his shot is blocked for a corner.

It’s taken short and the ball is played to Tzolis and his effort is blocked.

Arsenal 0-0 Coventry

20:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: Tzolis is allowed to carry the ball into the Coventry box, he creates a yard of space and gets a shot away but he can’t keep his effort down.

Matt Verri at the Emirates Stadium

20:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal fans absolutely bouncing in the opening stages of this match. First competitive match back here since winning the title and the mood is very, very good as you'd expect.

Hasn't been a particularly sharp start from the team though - Coventry have settled well.

Arsenal 0-0 Coventry

20:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

1 min: Positive start from Coventry straight from kick-off as they win a corner which is then dealt with by Calafiori.

Premier League predictions

19:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The new Premier League season is here, and with it a host of new unknowns.

Arsenal are defending champions for the first time in a generation, and will test their mettle against an array of managers new to their clubs and, for some, new to the league.

It has been even longer since Coventry were last in the top flight - will Frank Lampard continue to impress or are the Sky Blues destined to struggle with their fellow promoted clubs?

Plenty of questions to be answered over the next 10 months, and the Standard Sport football reporters, Matt Verri, Dom Smith and Sam Tabuteau, along with our sport reporters, Oli Gent and Arthur Ferridge, have had a go at predicting what is in store.

Assessing how Arsenal have fared in previous league title defences

19:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

When it was put to him in a recent interview that Arsenal are the defending Premier League champions, Mikel Arteta interjected.

“Attacking another Premier League,” came the correction. “That’s where we’re going.”

That is the ambition but it is easier said than done, as a glance through Arsenal’s history books confirms.

Since winning the First Division in the 1934-35 season to make it three in a row, Arsenal have claimed the top-flight title ten times.

On the past nine occasions, the Gunners have failed to defend their crown. That is 92 years of history that Arteta and his players are attempting to defy.

Here is how those title defences fell short for Arsenal...

We might get 60,000 people chanting the same thing tonight. Coventry players are out for their warm up and the away fans serenade them with "Campeones, Campeones, Ole, Ole, Ole."

They're not wrong, I guess, but the Arsenal fans might also be trying to take custody of that chant very soon.

As the Gunners squad come out, they're not announced as The Arsenal, as they normally are. Instead: "The Champions."

Lampard speaks

19:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Frank Lampard speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off.

"It means a great deal. I think the emotions are probably, working with the group, we became so close, but also the story of 25 years and the fanbase and what they were crying out for, desperate for, and we've managed to bring it back to the club. Amazing.

"Now reality is here. I loved driving up here, feeling the atmosphere, feeling the fans. This is top level. And the boys deserve it.

"Excitement and understanding. You're going to play Arsenal away at some point. Our season isn't going to be defined by this game today. Not many people will fancy us, if not everybody. That's fine. It gives the boys an opportunity to go out and show at this level what they can do.

"And then we'll see, because it's football."

Arsenal team analysed

Two changes to the Arsenal side that started the Community Shield win over Manchester City last weekend.

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka come in for Bruno Guimaraes and Noni Madueke.

Brazilian midfielder is not in the squad at all.

This means competitive home debut for Christos Tzolis.

Our man Matt Verri has reacted to the Arsenal team news.

Why Bruno Guimaraes is missing from Arsenal squad

19:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Bruno Guimaraes has been ruled out of Arsenal's Premier League opener against Coventry.

The Brazilian made his first start for the club last weekend in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

However, Guimaraes came off at half-time in Cardiff and was pictured with an ice pack strapped to his right thigh.

Asked about that injury at his pre-match press conference, Arteta indicated it was not a serious one.

"Let's see how he is," the Arsenal manager said.

"He's evolving really well, but let's see for tomorrow."

However, Guimaraes has been left out of the matchday squad to face Coventry, making it a frustrating start to his Arsenal career.

Arsenal kit change

Arsenal will be sporting a change to their new home kit tonight.

One of the many modern perks of winning the Premier League is having the achievement commemorated on the following season’s kit.

That comes in the form of a gold Premier League badge that adorns the sleeves on each of the home, away and any third strips - and all goalkeeper kits - of the defending champions.

Lewis-Skelly transfer stance

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has revealed that Myles Lewis-Skelly will “100 percent” be an Arsenal player when the summer transfer window closes.

Lewis-Skelly’s future at the Emirates Stadium has been plunged into doubt over the past few weeks, with Chelsea and Manchester United both offered the chance to sign the teenager.

Further concerns were raised when Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick refused to rule out the possibility of a sale that would have not been popular amongst the fanbase.

However, in an attempt to put the transfer rumours to bed once and for all, Arteta was firm when asked if Lewis-Skelly will be at the club beyond the end of the transfer window.

Predicted Arsenal XI

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Bruno Guimaraes' availability will likely have a big say on what role Declan Rice plays at the Emirates.

Rice was given an extended break after the World Cup and has made just one appearance this summer since returning, playing the 45 minutes when replacing Guimaraes last weekend.

If Guimaraes is fit, Arteta could be tempted to further ease Rice back into action and give him more minutes off the bench.

Predicted Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Hincapie; Guimaraes, Lewis-Skelly; Saka, Odegaard, Tzolis; Havertz

Will Arsenal win Premier League title again? The case for and against

In the days after Arsenal sealed the Premier League title last season, Josh Kroenke was already eyeing more.

"We think we have a chance here to dominate," the co-chair declared.

That bid starts on Friday night at home to Coventry, when Arsenal get their Premier League defence underway.

Not since the 1934-35 season have the Gunners won back-to-back titles. It is the latest long wait that Mikel Arteta is tasked with ending.

Score prediction

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

If Arsenal reach the levels they showed in the Community Shield win over Manchester City last weekend then Coventry are in for a long night.

However, opening games of a season rarely go to plan and we think the visitors - on their return to the Premier League after such a long time - will make it difficult for the Gunners.

Eventually, the champions' quality will show.

Arsenal to win, 2-0.

Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni are both in contention to face Arsenal, but Haji Wright has been ruled out through injury and is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“Haji Wright won’t be available for the Arsenal game," Frank Lampard.

“He won’t be available for a little while, he’s got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us.
