Arsenal news: Negotiations begin with William Saliba as "special one" delivers reminder

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with Sunday’s 5-0 drubbing of Nottingham Forest as the Gunners showed just how much quality they have in their side.

One of the standouts in defence yet again was William Saliba, who has taken no time to adapt to the Premier League, and the Gunners have now submitted a fresh contract offer to the Frenchman. Elsewhere, an injury update has been provided on Bukayo Saka, while his replacement over the weekend has been labelled as a “special one”.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal offer fresh terms to William Saliba

Arsenal are desperate to tie a number of players down to new contracts this season in order to secure their long-term futures at the club, with the latest of those being Saliba.

The Frenchman has hit the ground running during his first Premier League campaign for the Gunners, despite initially joining them three years ago, and his performances are beginning to attract the attention of clubs elsewhere as they plan to get their hands on the centre back.

However, according to The Athletic, Arsenal are negotiating over a new, and improved contract for Saliba but it is understood no agreement has been reached as of yet, although the first steps have now been taken to tie him down past next summer.

Injury update given on Bukayo Saka

Arsenal’s worst fears flashed before their eyes when Saka was forced off through injury against Nottingham Forest at the weekend but an update has now been provided on the winger's situation.

The youngster limped off with injuries to his ankle and foot during the first half at the Emirates Stadium and England manager Gareth Southgate will also have been holding his breath at the sight of the 21-year-old being unable to continue with play.

However, Mikel Arteta has since revealed that he is hopeful Saka has avoided any serious injury and he was assessed at Arsenal’s training ground on Monday despite the squad being given the day off by their manager.

Arsenal reminded of their own “special one”

Arsenal’s forgotten man Reiss Nelson exploded into life as Saka’s replacement against Nottingham Forest on Sunday with two goals and an assist in what was his first Premier League appearance of the season.

The 23-year-old has been around the first team picture for a number of years now but spent last season out on loan with Feyenoord, before returning in the summer. However, even though injury has kept him out of action until this month, Arteta claimed that “everybody” is talking about his special talent behind the scenes.

Following the game, he said: “After the spell that he had last year on loan, we wanted him back to see if there are any changes, and there’s a prospect that we can really take it to the next level. We think the potential is there and we think we’ve seen something in Reiss that is special.”
