Arsenal defender Alex Kirk to return to Ayr United for Premiership promotion play-offs

Alex Kirk will deliver Ayr United a massive play-off boost by returning north to join the promotion bid.

The Arsenal centre half, who had been on loan at Somerset this season, had returned to the Emirates in March with what looked to be a season-ending injury.

But after completing his rehab last week, the 20-year-old has been cleared to return and join Lee Bullen's squad for the push for the Premiership.

He told the Ayrshire Post: "As soon as the game finished on Friday night, I was getting my stuff ready to come back up the road.

"I actually just finished my rehab that day and have been cleared to return to training. I am desperate to be involved.

"Whatever part I can play, I want to do it. I know I might not be coming straight back up into the starting XI, but if I can play any part at all, I want to do it.

"I've made great friends at the club this season and want to do whatever I can to help us out.

"It would have been a massive shame if we hadn't made the play-offs given the season we had.

"I always knew that if we did reach this stage, there would be a chance I could return in some capacity. And the fact we've gone straight through to the semi-finals also gives me that extra week of training to be ready.

"Friday night was amazing - for me sat at home it was a case of nervously refreshing my phone all night to see the goals going in and see us changing position in the league.

"Thankfully we've done it and I can't wait to get back up the road this week and join the boys again."
