Arnold couple Paulette Griffiths and Colin Harrison made the headlines this week when they bagged a life-changing contract to supply their Jamaican rum cakes to Aldi supermarkets up and down the country. Community reporter Keimae Blake took a trip to a city branch to see for herself what the fuss is about.
Firstly a huge congratulations to Colin and Paulette. Not only did their Finest Jamaican Rum Cake leave judges ‘blown away’ on Channel 4's Aldi's Next Big Thing - I was left wanting more.
This is a high quality Jamaican rum cake like no other. Made with care, you can taste the array of flavours. Rum cake critics might ‘what if I can’t taste the rum?’ Trust me, you will...
The Harrison and Griffiths Bakery is family run. They have been baking since the late 80s and, after decades of hard graft in the industry, I’m glad they’ve been recognised.
I got my cake for a reasonable £4.99 at the Aldi supermarket at Castle Retail Park, Radford. The simple packaging holds inside the best rum cake I’ve ever tasted.
As soon as I opened the box, a strong smell of rum hit me. The 363G cake I bought had an ABV percentage of 3.5% of Jamaican White Rum - I had mine with a cup of tea but the alcohol was noticeably strong.
Cutting a slice and tucking in, the cake is delicious, mouth watering, moist and tasteful. It’s everything you want in a cake. On the front of the box it says: 'A taste of the Caribbean, a slice of paradise.' That is exactly right.
With ingredients including: fortified British Ruby Wine, raisins, Glacé cherries and, of course, rum this cake will be a new favourite in many cupboards and the perfect present. For those who didn't watch the Channel 4 programme, this Jamaican rum cake left the judges impressed to say the least.
This is the perfect cake for Christmas day as well as other occasions such as weddings and birthdays. This Christmas, these deserving winners will be very busy indeed. Your hard work Colin and Paulette has most certainly paid off.
The Channel 4 show gives small-scale food producers the chance to pitch their ideas for the chance of a lifetime. The winning Jamaican rum cakes went on sale from Friday (October 28) just hours after the show was aired. Judges said they were "blown away" after biting into the couples' delicious treat. They will now have to create a minimum of 30,000 cakes for 970 Aldi stores
