An Arizona grandfather is preparing for an above-the-knee amputation of his right leg after tripping and collapsing onto a blistering sidewalk in reportedly 110- to 120-degree desert heat Grant Siler, a 72-year-old Army veteran from Mohave County, was left helpless on the pavement for more than an hour before a passerby found him. What happened next shows just how dangerous extreme summer heat can become when the ground itself is dangerously hot.
On Aug. 3, Siler went for what was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon walk near his home in Bullhead City, Arizona. Before leaving, he had accidentally dropped an 80-pound cinderblock on his foot. His family describes him as a stoic man, so he brushed off the injury and went on with his walk.
