An Arizona inmate, Michael Dunbar, aged 43, has tragically passed away following a physical altercation with another inmate at the Arizona State Prison Complex- Eyman. The incident occurred on Monday, as confirmed by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR).
Dunbar had been in custody since 1998 after being sentenced out of Maricopa County for charges related to sexual conduct with a minor and indecent exposure. His scheduled release date was set for June 15, 2038.
The ADCRR has emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards violence within correctional facilities and has pledged to pursue prosecution pending the outcome of the investigation into this incident. All inmate deaths are subject to thorough investigation in collaboration with the county medical examiner’s office.
Furthermore, the ADCRR's Office of the Inspector General has initiated a criminal investigation into Dunbar's untimely death. Prison records indicate that Dunbar had a history of disciplinary infractions, including instances of assault against fellow inmates dating back to 2010.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced within the prison system and the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment for both inmates and staff. The ADCRR remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and security while ensuring accountability for any acts of violence that occur within its facilities.
