Petite size
The smaller of the two models, the 40mm replaced the 38mm option from the Apple Watch Series 1-3. The only model you can buy with this size screen at the moment is the Apple Watch SE, although you can find second-hand and refurbished Series 4, 5, and 6 models if you'd rather go that route.

Bigger and better?
The 44mm watch replaced the 42mm from the Series 1-3, bringing more real screen estate to the table. The only watch you can buy at this size right now is the SE, although you can find refurbished or second-hand Series 4, 5, or 6.
