Appeal launched by EK community centre to install life-saving defibrillator

A fundraising drive has been launched to install a life-saving defibrillator at an East Kilbride community centre.

The equipment was recently fitted near the Post Office in the Village and now the Village Centre are looking to raise just over £1700 for their own.

They want to purchase the defibrillator and outdoor cabinet for it, to be located on the outside of their building, near the kerbside, available to use by anyone who needs it.

And after the plea was put out on social media, electricians ETS Services, who are based in Motherwell, have offered to fit the defibrillator cabinet free of charge.

Lanarkshire Live told how a defibrillator was accessed just 24 hours after being installed in nearby Blantyre with equipment installed elsewhere in the region also put to use recently.

Village Centre manager, Joanne Gray, told us : "Installing a defibrillator is something we have been really keen to do for a while, but no charity has the spare funds really, particularly at the minute.

"We knew East Mains Community Council had helped get one installed at the Post Office so we spoke to them and got great advice and they put us in touch with the British Heart Foundation as we knew nothing about them really.

"The reason we think it's so important is that we have 2000 people coming in to the centre every week, we have the theatre nearby, the bowling club and EK Thistle.

"We are so passionate about helping the local community and feel this would be a fabulous benefit to those visiting the centre and also those nearby.

"Why not have one at a central point that's easily accessible? The equipment is a real life-saver and a few minutes could make all the difference to someone who needs it.

"It's something that we hope would never have to be used but we would rather it was there in case it was needed by someone in an emergency.

"And we are absolutely thrilled that Callum Hunter from ETS Services got in touch with such a kind offer."
