Antony gives Gary Neville plenty to think about after critical "a lot to do" remarks

Antony made a triumphant return from injury on Thursday night to send Manchester United into the last 16 of the Europa League.

The Brazil international, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on Friday, came off the bench to score United's winner against Barcelona at Old Trafford. It was his first goal for Erik ten Hag's side since the 3-0 victory against Charlton in January's Carabao Cup tie.

Antony has faced criticism in recent weeks due to his modest record and huge price tag. The winger has scored just six goals and provided one assist for United since his £85million transfer from Ajax last summer, with Gary Neville demanding more from him.

Neville was asked whether he was concerned with Antony's transfer fee during a Q&A on Twitter in January. The fan who asked the question compared Antony to United flop Paul Pogba, who re-joined the club for a world-record transfer fee in August 2016.

Pogba went on to win just two trophies during his second spell at Old Trafford - which lasted six years - before re-joining Juventus last summer on a free transfer. Neville admitted he was concerned about Antony's record when responding to the question.

The former United skipper tweeted: "Agree with Antony (he's a lot to do to get to [a] 95m [£85m] price tag). Pogba had pedigree when he signed for United, so not comparable."

Neville's opinion on Antony - who missed United's last three Premier League fixtures due to a leg injury - may have changed after his match-winning display against Barcelona on Thursday night. Although the ex-defender is yet to comment on the Brazilian's performance, his delight at United's victory was obvious from his post-match tweet.

Neville wrote: "Breath-taking United over the two games! Fast and furious football."

That much is true. United have turned a corner since Erik ten Hag was appointed last summer. They are third in the Premier League - five points behind leaders Arsenal having played a game more - and are doing well in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.

United face West Ham in the last 16 of the FA Cup next month and will be regarded as one of the favourites to win the Europa League after knocking out Barcelona. They could also lift silverware on Sunday when they face Newcastle in the final of the Carabao Cup.

United's success under Ten Hag is impressive when you consider how poor they were under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last season, when they recorded their lowest points total in 32 years. They also failed to win silverware for the fifth consecutive year.

"The belief of the team is always there and the belief of the fans is amazing," Bruno Fernandes told BT Sport at full-time. "They pushed us through difficult moments for great comebacks. It is a great result but now we have a big game on Sunday."
