Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is understood to be hesitant over a move to Manchester United in the summer after the Red Devils held talks with the centre-back’s representatives. That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who report that there is “little expectation” the Germany international will be heading to Old Trafford over the summer.
The report claims that the 29-year-old is exploring options with teams guaranteed Champions League football next season. United are currently sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who have played a game less than them.
It all comes as Rudiger’s deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of the season, having spent five-years at the club since his move from Roma in 2017. While the defender struggled for a place at times, under current boss Thomas Tuchel he has been an influential figure in a usual back three system.

Despite the talks elsewhere, the manager is still confident of a new deal being concluded. He said earlier this month: “I would try to meet him if he was not our player, we still have a contract and have a good chance [to renew] when the ownership issue is sorted. It is fair enough if he listens to others but I am still confident."
Not only has Rudiger won trophies in his time in west London, but the guarantee of Champions League football along with more potential trophies may make him stay for longer. To give Chelsea supporters some hope, the defender has also already discussed the possibility of staying at the club for longer.
Speaking to The Athletic back in February, he said: “I feel great here, I have always said it. I think the way I play you can see that I’m happy here. But there are also other people who have to make decisions.”
Whether a new deal can be agreed remains to be seen. However, the Blues will be hoping they can keep hold of an influential squad member to continue their charge into next season.
