Anthony Joshua yet to decide on new trainer as he leaves coach in limbo

Anthony Joshua is yet to split with Robert Garcia despite promoter Eddie Hearn insisting the boxer has been searching for a new team.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Joshua, 33, was said to have split with Garcia after failing to win back his unified titles against Oleksandr Usyk in August. 'AJ' parted ways with longtime trainer Rob McCracken after first losing to Usyk in September of last year and linked up with Garcia for the rematch.

The Brit put up a good showing against Usyk second time around but suffered the same fate as he was outpointed by the Ukrainian. Joshua was believed to have sacked his new trainer Garcia over the phone after losing to Usyk again, but Garcia has insisted the pair have not officially split just yet.

"A couple of weeks ago he called me to tell me that he was going to come to the United States, not to search, that he was going to come to meet certain coaches to see how he felt, how he fit in with them," Garcia told Izquierdazo. "He never told me 'I'm not going to train with you anymore', he never told me 'I didn't like it with you'.

"He has his team that works with him and they made that decision. I respect him and what I respect the most is that he spoke to me to tell me that he was going to be in the United States training, practicing with certain coaches."

Joshua toured the US to scout for a new coach before ending up with Garcia and has recently been spotted talking to coaches such as Virgil Hunter and Derrick James. For Joshua to get back to winning ways, Garcia thinks he needs to get out of his comfort zone and can only do so by partnering with a coach in the US.

"Even if it's not with me, I'd like to see him train in the United States," Garcia added. "Because it is where he has to take a camp, where he will change all his routines or where he will leave his area at ease, he will go to a place where he will have more responsibility, it is what I recommended to them."

Joshua is without a win in over two years having last beaten Kubrat Pulev in December 2020. 'AJ' was hoping to get another fight in before the end of the year but looks set to make his return in 2023, with several big tests such as a rematch with Dillian Whyte and a potential mega-fight against Deontay Wilder on the table for him.
