Anthony Gordon was quick to praise a “special” Newcastle United welcome after being unveiled in front of Magpies supporters on Tuesday evening. “Everyone has been so welcoming. Can’t wait to play in front of you all,” he said on social media.
However, not all fans are convinced by his arrival. In fact, ahead of the Magpies clinching his £45m signing, they were almost split down the middle as to whether Eddie Howe should move for the Everton winger.
Voting via ChronicleLive's Swerve or Swoop tool, 50.3% of fans said the club should swoop for the 21-year-old, with 49.7% opting to swerve him. The Magpies fans’ voting perhaps reflected the lack of quality additions available in the January window, with only Flamengo’s Matheus Franca gaining much support from respondents.

Just over 64% of fans believed Newcastle should swoop for the 18-year-old midfielder, by far the clearest cut of the players the fans wanted to pursue. A move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher had the support of 54% of fans, with Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij gaining an identical split to Gordon.
Ruben Neves also split the poll, with 49.2% of the opinion Newcastle should sign the Wolves man. In contrast, Magpies fans were quite clear about who the club should steer well clear of.
Only 28% of fans favoured a swoop for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin had 81% of Magpies fans saying the club should swerve the Everton forward.
