Anthony Albanese Evacuated From The Lodge After Bomb Threat Last Night

Anthony Albanese was briefly evacuated from The Lodge in Canberra on Tuesday night after a bomb threat sparked a major security response at the prime minister’s official residence.

He was taken to another secure location at around 6pm while officers searched the property and was allowed to return later that evening once police were satisfied there was no danger.

The Australian Federal Police said they responded to an “alleged security incident” at a protection establishment in the ACT and carried out a full sweep. In a statement, they said “a thorough search of a protection establishment was undertaken and nothing suspicious was located” and confirmed “there is no current threat to the community or public safety”.

The Guardian reported the search lasted several hours before the all‑clear was given and the prime minister returned to The Lodge after 9pm, with no injuries reported.

Albanese’s office has kept public comment minimal and referred detailed questions back to the AFP. “We trust the AFP to do their jobs and thank them for their work,” a spokesperson for the prime minister said.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor wrote on X that he was pleased the PM was safe, adding: “Threats against any parliamentarian are utterly abhorrent, especially in a country built on expressing our differences through debate.”

The incident comes at a time of growing unease about how often politicians are being targeted. AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett recently told a Senate committee that politicians, other office holders and members of Australia’s Jewish community were being singled out by violent offenders, and said more than 20 people had been charged since late last year over such threats.

She warned of “the continued rise of individual grievance”, including people willing to move from online abuse to real‑world action.

For now, the message from authorities is that there is no ongoing danger at The Lodge, but the pressure on security agencies to stay ahead of these threats is only increasing.
