Osiris, a 26-year-old female beluga whale recently rescued from Canada's Marineland theme park, has died while undergoing medical treatment at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
The Shedd Aquarium reported that Osiris suffered a rapid decline in her behavior and respiratory patterns, passing away despite intensive lifesaving efforts by veterinary and animal care teams.
Osiris is the third rescued beluga whale from Marineland to die in recent weeks at the Chicago facility, following the deaths of 20-year-old Rain and 23-year-old Peekachu, along with a resident beluga named Beethoven.
The belugas were transported in water tanks aboard a Boeing 777 to Shedd Aquarium and SeaWorld San Antonio in July after Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, closed following allegations of animal abuse.
The relocation efforts were organized after public donations for the care of the 30 belugas left at Marineland ran out, raising fears that the animals would face potential euthanasia without intervention.
