A fantastic weight of skimmers and bream were taken on the Leeds Liverpool Canal last Wednesday, once again underlining what draws many anglers to our famous local cut.
As many may well know, the Leeds Liverpool canal is teaming with fish throughout its historic length and as it winds from the city lengths, 26 miles out to the leafy suburbs at Halsall, Liverpool & District AA stand proud to accept that it’s notably one of the best canals in the country.
On the match itself which was held at Lydiate, a line-up of top canal anglers took positions on the weekly L&DAA open which sees members enjoying a small mid-week competition which breaks up the week.
In this one, Blundellsands rod John Easton took the top honours as he enjoyed an amazing session taking a lovely net of bream and skimmers for 38.8.0. Opting for a bread and maggot approach, Easton kept it simple to catch steady throughout the match on pole at nine and 11 metres.

That was good enough to keep his neighbour Anthony Lloyd in the next peg at bay, as he also saw himself before the huge shoal. Lloyd, travelling over from Leigh took another great catch as he put together 32.14.0 on to test the scales. Just out of the main action was Lydiate’s Steve Ball. Ball took third place on the day with 12lb.
Easton was also in action on Sunday as the association held the weekly open at Halsall. Here he put 2 bream and skimmers in the net on maggot for 12.10.0. No stranger to success, once again Easton emphasised why he’s notably one of the finest anglers to grace the banks of our famous cut.
On the club scene following Maghull & Lydiate AC, Maghull’s Matty Lennon took the top honours on the clubs trip over the water to Lingmere Fishery. A water with huge mixed assortment of species to attract many anglers, it’s a venue that is also extremely popular with the match fraternity.
In this one, Lennon just eased his way narrowly ahead of Paul Wright who put together 53.15.0. Lennon took 54.12.0 to win. Graham Handford with 45.7.0 took third place.
Over at Tarleton, the Alliance match on Chapel saw Lydiate’s Colin Pellow take the day’s top club points and pools. Pellow took a superb 95.1.0 to top current club champion Kevin Bradshaw’s 79.4.0 second place. Kirkby’s Glynn Jones took a third placed 69.9.0.
On the junior scene, St Helens Angling Lead Coach Paul Lucas held his fourth session within St Helens at the weekend. This saw 19 children and four adults enjoy a warm taster session on the St Helens Sankey canal.
Lucas, born and bred in St Helens is a stalwart of the junior angling scene on Merseyside and his sessions, sponsored by the Angling Trust, Environment Agency, Postcode Lottery and St Helens AA, have proven a great success to support our budding young anglers.
To date, 73 youngster along with 10 adults have enjoyed taster sessions with expert one to one coaching from Paul and his team. All free, pike to 7lb, roach to a 1lb, skimmers to 1,5lb have made for an exciting day for all involved. Contact Paul Lucas 07555 320302.
