TORONTO — The Angels’ offence, er, offense came to life on the first day of their weekend in Canada.
After scoring just 12 runs in the first seven games of this trip, the Angels doubled that total in a 12-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
The Angels have struggled to produce runs all season, so games like this one have been rare. They hadn’t scored more than seven since July 30 and they hadn’t won a game by more than six since July 24.
After the Angels loaded the bases without scoring in the first, they unloaded in the second.
Jo Adell reached on an infield single, Ryan Aguilar drew a walk in his first big league plate appearance, and Andrew Velazquez reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. David Fletcher hit one off the top of the wall in left field, doubling home two runs.
Mike Trout then struck out, but Shohei Ohtani followed with a two-run triple off the fence in right-center. Luis Rengifo punched an opposite-field single into left to drive in Ohtani.
In the third, Velazquez hit a two-run homer, his seventh of the season.
Adell tacked on a run with his fifth homer of the season — his first since Aug. 4 — in the seventh inning. Adell then hit a two-run homer against infielder Whit Merrifield in the ninth and finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Trout hit a two-run homer in the eighth, his 27th of the season. He now holds the Angels’ all-time runs record, with 1,025. He passed Garret Anderson.
The outburst provided plenty of cushion for Reid Detmers, who worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
Detmers had to labor to get through the first two innings, working around three hits and two walks. He got one break when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came off the bag on a stolen base attempt. He was called safe on the field, but the play was overturned.
Detmers didn’t allow a hit over three innings, until giving up a leadoff double in the fifth. Manager Phil Nevin pushed him to 105 pitches, just three shy of the career-high number he reached in his no-hitter.
Andrew Wantz, José Marte, Gerardo Reyes and Jesse Chavez finished it off, giving the Angels their American League-leading 15th shutout of the season.
Reyes appeared in his first major league games since 2019, after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
