Ange Postecoglou first Tottenham transfer at risk of Arsenal hijack in £21.5m summer battle

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou could be set for his first encounter with his new clubs bitter rivals Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window. On Tuesday it was confirmed that Spurs had appointed Postecoglou on a four-year contract and he will officially start on July 1 following his domestic treble season at Celtic.

Upon his arrival a significant squad rebuild in north London is expected to take place with captain Hugo Lloris and Ivan Perisic leading what could be as many as seven first-team departures, according to The Telegraph. Postecoglou's biggest challenge looks set to come in the form of keeping star striker Harry Kane who has strong interest in his services from Real Madrid as they seek to acquire a Karim Benzema replacement.

Incomings will also be very important this summer with Harry Maguire, Max Kilman and Marc Guehi some of the homegrown defensive options Spurs could buy. James Maddison also has admirers at Hotspur Way with his Leicester team-mate Harvey Barnes also expected to depart following the clubs relegation to the Championship.

A new name of interest to Tottenham emerged earlier this week as Victor Nelsson following a superb season for the Galatasaray defender. The 24-year-old made 33 appearances at the back in Galatasaray's title-winning season and a recent report from the Turkish press claimed Spurs were close to completing his signing.

However, that move could be hijacked by north London rivals Arsenal with Fanatik, via Mirror, claiming that Arsenal have joined the race along with Sevilla. It has also been widely noted that the Danish international has a €25million (£21.5m) release clause, although any official bids are yet to break €15m (£12.9m).

The Gunners are also interested in his team-mate Sacha Boey but no formal talks have taken place over a transfer with Galatasaray setting a clear asking price, as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. He wrote on Twitter: "Arsenal have not made any proposal for Sacha Boey at this stage, despite reports.

"Been told there was no meeting with his new agents, just one of many players appreciated but not a negotiation as things stand. Galatasaray want more than €20m for their right back."

Poaching either from Turkey will certainly be a challenge and the selling stance of Club president Dursun Ozbek will likely only make things harder.

“We do not intend to sell any players,” Ozbek told Sabah earlier in the 2022/23 season. "We have a very good squad, and we are fighting for the title. Besides Sacha Boey and Victor Nelsson, there are offers for three or four more players because the squad is a very good squad.”
