Andy Walker unimpressed with Celtic over BBC ban

Andy Walker admits Celtic's ban of two broadcasters last week left him "sad".

The Scottish champions hosted a media conference last Friday to mark the unveiling of Brendan Rodgers' return to the club as manager.

It was held at Celtic Park, as the country's mainstream media and fan media flooded to Glasgow's east end to speak to the Irishman.

There was one noticeable absentee though, with BBC denied access to the event. PLZ Soccer were also banned.

A statement from the Beeb said that they were in talks with Celtic to resolve the situation, but nothing more has come from it.

And Walker admits he was left very unimpressed by his former club's course of action.

Speaking on Go Radio's Football Show, he said: "I've got to say, it doesn't impress me Celtic banning so many people from press conferences. I just don't think it's the way ahead.

"I think there's a lot of reasonable people about and if you've got any sort of gripe with any individual, why don't you have a chat about it?

"Maybe they have and maybe I'm wrong but for example, put anything to Brendan Rodgers if you wanted to be critical of him, his team, anyone around him - he's the type of guy who would be able to handle it.

"Ange Postecoglou did a few times last season when he thought one or two questions were a bit cheeky or a bit naughty. I think strong, sensible, reasonable people can deal with these things.

"But banning broadcasters from press conferences, I find it a bit sad that my club choose to do that.

"What is too far? Just being critical or having an opinion, what is too far - is it personal? I think too far is if something is defamatory, that's too far and you shouldn't be allowed to do that.

"I don't know the full story but I do know some broadcasters have been banned and it just doesn't sit easy with me, there's always room for dialogue."

It was reported last week that the ban was imposed on the BBC due to a column by one of their writers and their critical views of Rodgers' appointment.
