Andy Robertson jokes 'little scouser' Trent Alexander-Arnold will eclipse his record

Andy Robertson has joked that his ‘little scouser’ Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold will beat him to a Premier League record currently held by a former Everton icon.

The Reds duo are two of the best full-backs in the top-flight, making major contributions to Liverpool ’s Premier League and Champions League titles they won in successive seasons.

They have once again excelled this season, with Robertson notching 11 assists and one goal, while Alexander-Arnold has struck twice as well as registering an astonishing 16 assists.

Their performances this term have also put the two Liverpool men on a collision course as they battle to claim the Premier League for assists by a defender, which is currently held by former Toffees star Leighton Baines.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Who do you think will break the record first - Andy Robertson or Trent Alexander-Arnold? Comment below.

Baines registered 53 assists in the Premier League during his time at Everton and Wigan Athletic, with Robertson just six behind him.

But closing in on Robertson’s tally is Alexander-Arnold, who had notched 43 assists in the top-flight heading into Saturday’s clash with Leeds.

With both of the Reds stars still being young, they appear almost certain to overtake Baines within the next two seasons.

While he is currently ahead of his team-mate, Robertson believes that it is Alexander-Arnold who is the favourite to take the record off Baines.

“When I talk about assists it's always because I feel as if people judge me and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] off them now,” he told the BBC.

“I think a couple of my best games this season have been ones where I've not gave assists but it's a good feeling when you do.

“For me, you want to strive for more so of course it's a target that I've got [breaking the record]. Of course you want to be number one.

“But I know once I get to number one I've got the little Scouser that's going to be behind me that will probably clear me out the park.

“Hopefully I'll get there before him, at least I'll be able to claim it for a couple of months anyway and then he'll take it off me!”

Alexander-Arnold holds high pedigree when it comes to Premier League records for defenders, as he currently holds the record for the most assists by a defender in a single season.

Klopp has also raved about the two rivals for Baines’ title and last month hailed Alexander-Arnold as being “insane”.

“I don’t know anybody who is like Trent. Who is a right-back and is that decisive and influential and all these kind of things,” Klopp said in January.

“The package of Trent is insane. It’s not that he delivers every day, there are still departments where he can improve and has to improve.

“We will work on them and I will not stop telling him, but the package is really interesting, I would say.

“I’m not sure what it means in history. Still 15 years or whatever time to play and to create and to score and to learn and improve but the last five years were a good start in a career I would say.”
