Andre Onana fine after horror car crash prior to Cameroon World Cup playoff

Cameroon and Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana is thought to be okay after reportedly being involved in what appeared to be a horror car crash while on his way to training for his national side.

The shot-stopper was en route to meet up with his Cameroon teammates when the incident occurred. Onana was allegedly travelling from Cameroon capital city Yaounde to his country’s training camp in Douala on Tuesday morning when his car was was seriously damaged.

Reports have since emerged that the 25-year-old is safe and well, while a video uploaded to Twitter appears to show Onana up on his feet and talking to other people involved in the crash. No casualties have been reported though the cars involved are likely to be written-off.

The incident is unlikely to rule Onana out of Cameroon's upcoming World Cup play-off qualifying clash against Algeria. The Indomitable Lions arguably underwhelmed at the recent Africa Cup of Nations. Onana was between the sticks as they reached the final four, but were beaten by Egypt on penalties at the semi-final stage.

They did have something to shout about in the end as Cameroon toppled Burkina Faso in the tournament's third-place play off, again via a penalty shootout. At club level, Onana's future remains up in the air given he confirmed he would not be penning an extension with Dutch giants Ajax.

He first joined the club in 2016 and has won two Eredivisie titles alongside two Dutch FA Cups and was one game away from winning the 2017 Europa League but Ajax were toppled by Manchester United in the final. Onana's current deal expires at the end of the season.

The goalkeeper gave his reasons to Dutch broadcaster NOS as he explained: "I have done my best for this club, so I think it was important for me to look for a new challenge. "I think it's my right to sign the contract or not to sign the contract.

"At the end of the day, life is about making choices. I think I did a great job for this club for so many years already and I think that my time is over in Ajax." Onana has attracted plenty of interest, with both Arsenal and Lyon keeping tabs on the shot-stopper for much of the last summer transfer window.

In the end, the Gunners opted to purchase Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United but it has since been all but confirmed that Onana will join Serie A giants Inter Milan on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign. The deal with the Italian titans is expected to last for five years and see the 'keeper pocket around €3million per year.
