Andhra Pradesh: 28-year-old prisoner commits suicide at Piler sub-jail in Chittoor

TIRUPATI: A 28-year-old man accused of sexual assault has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell at the sub-jail in Piler town of Annamaiah district on Friday.

According to sources, Rajesh Nayak of Mudupulavaripalle under Yerragunta panchayat in the district, was found hanging in his cell by the jail staff during a routine examination in the morning.

Though he was rushed to the Government Hospital in the town, Rajesh Nayak could not be saved. He was remanded on March 26 after he was charged by the police in connection with a sexual assault on a minor girl. He was lodged in the Piler sub-jail along with other prisoners. The jail authorities have ruled out any unruly behaviour on Rajesh’s part.

Meanwhile, on learning about the suicide of Rajesh, some of his relatives have reached the sub-jail premises and protested against the jail authorities, accusing the jail staff of foul play.

While the local police have registered a case related to an unnatural death, the department of prisons too would conduct an inquiry into the alleged suicide of the prisoner, sources said.
