An interview with Gwenno - the first Mercury Prize nominated artist not to sing in English

Musician Gwenno has made history with her new album, Tresor. It’s the first album not largely in English to be shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.

Tresor is mainly sung in Cornish, although Gwenno also slips into her other native language, Welsh, for the track titled Nid Yw Cymru Ar Werth – Wales Is Not For Sale.

“It’s sinking in this morning, but yesterday was such a blur,” she says via Zoom from her home in Cardiff following the Mercury Prize announcement. “It’s been fantastic, really brilliant.” She adds that, for her, it’s more about the nomination than the winning.
