Tourism could be completely transformed in Amsterdam following local government proposals that include a 20 per cent tourist tax, the closure of the cruise port and the buyout of businesses from the city centre.

Amsterdam already has one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe, currently set at 12 per cent of the overnight accommodation price, or a €15 (£13) tourist tax for day trippers.
