American families who use bank accounts held an average of $62,900 (approximately £51,800) in cash in 2025, yet the typical family had only $8,200 (approximately £6,800), according to new Federal Reserve data.

The figures, published in October 2026, show how a relatively small number of wealthy households pull the national average sharply upwards, while many families hold far more modest balances.
