American travel blogger shares emotional update from cruise ship hit by hantavirus outbreak

  • A suspected hantavirus outbreak has occurred aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20 with 149 people onboard.
  • Three individuals – a Dutch couple and a German national – have died, and a 69-year-old British passenger is in critical condition in Johannesburg.
  • Travel blogger Jake Rosmarin, a passenger on the ship, shared an emotional video expressing the uncertainty and human impact of the outbreak on those aboard.
  • Hantavirus is a rare, rodent-borne infection with no cure, which can be fatal and typically presents with flu-like symptoms that can progress to severe respiratory or renal syndromes.
  • The World Health Organization is actively investigating the outbreak, with hantavirus confirmed in one case, and further laboratory testing and epidemiological studies are ongoing.
