An American man, Elliot Eastman, who was abducted in the Philippines is presumed dead after a witness reported that he was shot during a struggle with his captors. The incident took place near his home in Sibuco, on the island of Mindanao, where he resided with his wife and shared videos of his life on YouTube.
According to regional police spokesman Lt. Col. Ramoncelio Sawan, the witness stated that Eastman was shot twice by his captors on the night of his abduction. Despite efforts to verify the witness' account, Eastman's body has not been located as the witness claimed it was thrown overboard.
Police have made several arrests in connection with the case, with three suspects killed in a gunbattle with authorities last month. Sawan has assured that efforts are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice to ensure the safety of foreigners residing in the area.
Sibuco, located in the western region of Mindanao, has been known for the presence of various Islamist insurgent groups. However, authorities have indicated that the current case is unlikely linked to Muslim rebels.
The US State Department has issued a warning advising citizens to reconsider travel to Mindanao due to the prevalent risks of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping.
