A new search for Amelia Earhart’s missing aircraft has failed to solve one of aviation’s most enduring mysteries, after researchers determined that a formation on a remote Pacific island was not the wreckage they had hoped to find. The feature, known as the Taraia Object, had attracted attention because its shape appeared consistent with a possible aircraft wreck. However, a recent expedition to Nikumaroro Island concluded that the formation was more likely to be tree debris than part of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra. The finding removes one possible lead from the investigation, but researchers have not abandoned the possibility that the pioneering aviator reached the island after disappearing in 1937.
