Almost 90 years after the disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart on a mission to circumnavigate the globe, experts have arrived at a distant island in the Pacific to inspect an oddity which may provide fresh clues regarding her last flight. The expedition team, consisting of 17 members from the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and Purdue University, has reached the Republic of Kiribati’s Nikumaroro Island on October 12 following a five-day journey of about 830 nautical miles.
Their target is a formation known as the Taraia Object, first noticed in satellite imagery in 2020.
