Amazon Gets FDA Warning Over HerpCare and Eight Other Unapproved Genital Herpes Products Sold Through Its Site

The Food and Drug Administration has warned Amazon over nine unapproved products sold for genital herpes symptoms, including HerpCare Ointment and HerpCare Spray. In a warning letter to Amazon.com Inc. dated Oct. 1 and posted Oct. 6, the agency said it has not approved any over-the-counter drug to treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent any sexually transmitted infection.

According to the FDA, Amazon shipped the products directly to U.S. consumers on behalf of third-party sellers through its Fulfillment by Amazon service. The agency said the products are unapproved new drugs that cannot legally be sold. "Effective treatment requires diagnosis and supervision by a licensed healthcare professional," the letter states.
