Amal Clooney's Venice Film Festival Pattern: Butter Yellow, Vintage Gowns and a Recurring Arrival Uniform

The 83rd Venice Film Festival opens Wednesday, September 2, and among the attendees expected on the Lido is Amal Clooney, whose husband George has premiered multiple films at the festival in recent years. While this year's looks haven't been photographed yet, Clooney's documented Venice red-carpet history offers a clear pattern worth revisiting: a softer, color-driven arrival look followed by a more dramatic, often archival gown for the premiere itself.

At last year's festival, Clooney arrived in Venice on August 26, 2025, ahead of the premiere of George Clooney's film "Jay Kelly," wearing a butter-yellow midi dress from Balmain's Resort 2026 collection. The sleeveless design featured the house's signature gold buckle belt at the waist, a fitted bodice and a thigh-high front slit, and was paired with white pointed-toe heels, a white Balmain "Ebene" handbag and oversized sunglasses. The color choice extended a pattern for Clooney, who wore a similar butter-yellow gown from Atelier Versace to the festival the year before, for the 2024 premiere of "Wolfs."

Two days later, for the "Jay Kelly" premiere itself on August 28, Clooney shifted into a bolder register entirely, wearing a vintage fuchsia Jean-Louis Scherrer gown by Erik Mortensen from the house's Autumn/Winter 1995-96 collection. The strapless taffeta mini featured ruching and button detailing down the front, with a dramatic, voluminous train unfurling from the back, creating a high-low effect between a compact upper silhouette and sweeping lower movement. She completed the look with strappy Aquazzura sandals, a gold Jimmy Choo clutch and her signature loose, glossy waves.
