Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common forms of dementia and can lead to decline in memory loss and thinking skills, eventually resulting in loss of independence. However, in a rare case, a US woman with Down syndrome remained mentally sharp and fully independent until her death, even though her brain showed all the hallmarks of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. The case was detailed in the Alzheimer's & Dementia Journal.
Doctors are now trying to understand how the woman remained symptom-free throughout her lifetime, cooking, shopping and socializing with no change in her behavior or way of life.
