Alphonso Davies cannot believe Harry Maguire is Manchester United captain over Cristiano Ronaldo

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has given an emphatic verdict on Harry Maguire’s captaincy at Manchester United, and insisted Cristiano Ronaldo should instead have the armband.

There have been questions over Maguire’s role as United captain throughout the season. The England international has endured a poor campaign at the heart of the Reds’ defence, leading to calls from supporters for him to be stripped of the armband.

His cause has not been helped by the return of Ronaldo to Old Trafford last summer, prompting some to call for the 37-year-old to be given the captaincy instead. Rumours of the pair not seeing eye-to-eye have followed them throughout the season, although both players have denied reports of discontent in the dressing room.

Maguire has also been defended by Ralf Rangnick, with the United interim boss sticking by his captain despite the 29-year-old’s struggles this season. Nevertheless, the calls for him to take the armband away from the defender have not gone away.

And the argument has even reached foreign shores, with Bayern full-back Davies weighing in. The Canada international was streaming himself playing FIFA 22 when he opened a pack with Maguire in it, causing him to give a brutal assessment of the United captain’s credentials.

“Can you guys imagine? Can you guys imagine…” Davies began.

He continued: “You are Ronaldo… One of the greatest players ever. And what’s his name is your captain? Harry Maguire is your captain?

“And you refer to him as ‘yes cap’. I don’t know what he says to him… Bro. I’m not dissing Harry Maguire but Ronaldo… Ronaldo should get the armband man.”

Maguire’s captaincy will no doubt be a talking point over the summer as United’s new permanent manager arrives at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag looks to be closing in on the job, and he will have to decide whether he will also stick by the defender, or look elsewhere.
