Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0: How AI is reshaping portfolio management and the role of human judgement

Investment management has always been about processing information, weighing risks and deciding what matters. What is changing is the scale and speed at which that process can now happen. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how investment decisions are researched, executed and monitored, raising a bigger question for portfolio managers: where can technology create a meaningful edge, and where does human judgement remain indispensable?

Portfolios are becoming more complex as investors look beyond traditional asset classes, considering global opportunities, private markets and alternative strategies alongside conventional allocations. More information can help, but it does not necessarily lead to better decisions. The real value lies in knowing what matters, what can be measured and what still requires interpretation.

From research to execution, the investment process is changing

AI in portfolio management is not limited to finding investment ideas. Its potential application extends across the investment process, including research, execution and portfolio monitoring. The ability to work through large amounts of information can change how quickly investment teams identify patterns or assess developments, while technology can also influence how portfolios are monitored over time.

But investment decisions rarely exist in isolation. Market conditions change, assumptions can be challenged, and an investment thesis may need to be reconsidered when circumstances shift. A system can support the process, but deciding how much weight to give a signal or when to question an existing view remains a different proposition.

This distinction is at the heart of the “ AI in Portfolio Management” panel at Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0, set to be held on October 8 in Mumbai. The session will explore where artificial intelligence is creating measurable advantages in investment decision-making and where human judgement still matter.

Four perspectives on the next phase of portfolio management

The discussion brings together Atul Suri, MD & CEO of Marathon Trends; Dhiraj Relli, MD & CEO of HDFC Securities Limited; Ravi Dharamshi, Founder & CIO of ValueQuest; and Sonam Srivastava, Founder & CEO of Wright Research. Together they will offer perspectives from market strategy, securities, investment management and research to a question that cuts across the investment ecosystem.

The panel follows a masterclass titled “Man or Machine? Future of Portfolio Management,” which will explore the convergence of AI, algorithms and human judgement across portfolio construction, risk management and wealth allocation. The two sessions place technology within the wider question of how portfolio management itself is evolving.

The conversation also sits within a broader Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0 agenda covering global capital flows, private credit, structured debt, family office investing, niche alternative assets, SIFs and GIFT City. The common thread is a changing investment landscape where the tools available to investors are expanding, even as the quality of the decision remains critical.

For investors, the more useful question may therefore be neither whether AI will replace human judgement nor whether technology should be resisted. It is where the two can work together without confusing speed with insight.
